I get into a lift, am alone and hope that no one else gets in. D. joins me. We greet each other. Not effusively, after all this time. I notice that the lift hasn't started yet. I go to the back and realise that you have to push a small wooden plate to make the lift work. It seems to be damaged. It takes a while before it starts and we set off.
